Fossil → Renewable Capacity Shift, 2010–2024

Installed electricity capacity (MW) by country, sub-region, and technology, ETL'd from source records into a geocoded, analysis-ready table, then decomposed into growth rates (CAGR) and regression trends by group technology.

Solar leads growth everywhere — but from very different bases

Compound annual growth rate of installed capacity, 2010–2024, broken out by sub-region and technology. Southern Asia's solar CAGR tops 60%; several sub-regions show fossil-fuel capacity actually contracting (Northern Europe, Northern America).

Plotting each technology's growth rate against how much of total global capacity it gained (or lost) makes the transition legible in one chart: solar and wind are the only technologies gaining share; fossil fuels lost nearly 19 points of share despite still growing in absolute terms.

Solar's growth curve is steepening past fossil fuels' straight line

Fitted linear trends for the six fastest-growing sub-region/technology pairs. Eastern Asia's fossil-fuel capacity has grown in a straight line since 2010; its solar capacity is on a visibly convex trajectory — still behind fossil fuels in absolute MW by 2024, but closing the gap at an accelerating rate rather than a constant one.

A +69% jump in 2021 — the post-COVID commodity rebound

China's copper export value grew steadily from 2013–2020, then spiked 69% year-over-year in 2021 before settling into single-digit growth/decline — a pattern consistent with the broader 2021 global commodity-price rebound visible in the global trend above.
